I spend a good amount of time pondering what are the factors for success and the causes of failure when it comes to implementing ICT4D projects. The type I'm mostly involved in implementing or evaluating is some form of Management Information System (MIS).
Simplistically stated, this is a set of social processes that include someone pushing data in one end of a technology interface so someone else can make sense of it at another interface.
Of course my motivation for this pondering behaviour is obvious - I want to see more of these projects succeed more often. I say 'more' instead of 'all' because I don't want anyone who may read this little musing to think I'm not a realist about just how challenging this is.
So while the motivation is straight forward enough, the solution of how to consistently deliver successful ICT4D interventions requires all the pondering you've got time to give it. At least for my little part of the universe, these ponderings now have a home - right here in this blog.
One of my approaches in trying to nut all this out is to mine the accumulated wisdom from other related disiplines where problem patterns are similar and lessons can be learned from the hard earned wisdom of others. With this as a basis and with some contextual tweaking I've found you can get some helpful direction. I'll also use this blog to explore some of these I've come across in case it may be useful to others.
The trick now will be to make sure that this initial entry is followed up by a subsequent stream not too few and far between. I've put an alert in my phone in good faith and noble intentions so let’s just see how we go:)
